The museum at Lindholm Hoje features the largest Viking burial site in Scandinavia and is located in the city of Aalborg in Northern Jutland.
The site was once covered by 4 meters of sand, therefore it was not until the year 1949 that it was realized that a large cemetery existed here. During the war, German occupation troops had dug trenches in the area, revealing the stones in many places.
There are some 700 graves here, the greater number being cremation graves. Excavations have brought forth items which date back to around 800 AD. Many of these objects comprise the collection found inside the museum. Other objects came from the houses which were located on or near the grave site.
